Why
can't I simply rent a cheap dedicated server?
People ask us this question every day! When streaming to the web you
do not need much server power. What you really need is dedicated bandwidth
which is very expensive (not umetered). When a provider offers you a
dedicated server you will basically be connected in a server farm to
a small traffic
line
together with many other servers. The server is dedicated, but the bandwidth
is shared. They usually sell the server traffic as unmetered. So you
are for example sharing a 100 Mbit line with several servers altough
your
dedicated
server
has
a 100
Mbit
or
even
1000 Mbit
network card installed. If you are using this dedicated server as a webserver,
then you will hardly recognize if the connection is a little slower (oversold).
However when streaming on shared traffic lines, you will have buffering
all the time. The streams will simply rip off because other servers in
the shared line also need the bandwidth. You may be lucky a certain amount
of time because your provider has not put many servers in your line yet,
but you can bet this will happen sooner or later. If it does not, you
can bet the provider will cancel your contract because with a full used
1000 Mbit line you will cost them a lot of money every month.
There
are many "companies" out there trying to start a streaming service
with these cheap dedicated servers. They usually have very
low pricing. Of course they are not able to do this business
for long because of the dedicated bandwidth which is needed.
So please take a closer look before you sign up with any stream
provider! Ask for dedicated bandwidth!
At the DRS 2006 Radio Streamer we have dedicated lines with huge bandwidth
which is not oversold. So because we do not have this bottle neck there
is no buffering and absolutely stable streaming since years. Your listeners
will appreciate it!

Listing in VirtualRadio VirtualRadio is the first streaming MP3
radio player for mobile phones and was named Best Consumer Solution
by Orange and Nokia. It can be compared to Winamp or Quick Time which
run on PCs only. This innovative radio player runs on mobile phones
with Symbian Operating System like Nokia and Sony Ericsson smartphones.
VirtualRadio applications are Symbian Signed which stands for Quality.
VirtualRadio was developed by NINJ Ltd, a Swiss developer of games
and applications.
VirtualRadio uses MP3 mono with a bitrate not
higher than 32kbs. Streams have to be in 8000, 11025, 16000,
22050, 32000 or 44100kHz. Recommended are 16000 or 22050kHz.
More information can be found on www.vradio.org
All DRS 2006 Radio Streamer can submit
their matching streams. Inclusion of radio stations is free.
NINJ provides banners and buttons which make it easy to communicate
to listeners
that their favourite station can be heard on mobile phones now.
Interested stations contact Juerg Ingold at ingold@ninj.com or

How you send your stream to the Radio Streamer
The last question left is how to send your stream to us. For
example the DRS
2006 radio automation software encodes your DRS 2006
Output + Mic + Line Feeds etc. and streams it to us. You don't
need to care
about
this anymore after you have done the setup with the IP, Port
and Password. Of course you can also use other softwares like
Winamp and
the DSP Plugin to stream to us. The only thing that really matters
on your
end is your upstream bandwidth and your provider quality.
You can calculate your possible upstream like
this:
If you have a 128 kbps upstream, take 90% of it. So in this case
it would be a maximum of 96 kbps you can securely upstream to us
(next stage under
115,2). BUT: This really depends on your provider and also if
you are using your internet connection for other things. You will
quickly find
out at which quality you can stream securely when you start your
test day with us.
How your listeners reach your stream Basically your listeners need a player. You can listen
to ShoutCast mp3 streams by using common free players like Winamp,
the Real Audio Player,
Freeamp or the Windows Media Player. In our opinion Winamp delivers
the best quality. But this is up to your listerns.
The link for ShoutCast servers basically looks like this: http://rs4.radiostreamer.com:11000/listen.pls (our
128 kbps live stream)
Of course you can use the link together with an image like this:
DRS 2006 Radio Network - 128 kbps live stream
Shoutcast Stream played with default pls player
If your
listeners click on this link, their standard player for *.pls files
will open and play the stream (try it ;-). This will usually either
be Winamp or the Real Audio Player. If you want to force that the Real
Audio Player will be used, then you simply make a *.ram file which points
to the shoutcast stream. To do this you open your windows editor and
enter 1 line: http://rs4.radiostreamer.com:8000/listen.pls Then you save this file as for example "real128.ram".
Now you upload this file to your server. If you now link to http://www.yourname.com/real128.ram the Real Audio Player will be used for sure to play the stream (if installed).
Here is a Demo.

If you
want to learn more about the options you have with ram files then visit
this site atReal
Audio.
If you want it to look a little more professional, you make a so called
Windows Media Metafile (asx file) with your favorite Editor. Find
out
more about asx files right here! Also
find out more about asx and pls files in our FAQ section.
